Pangasinan native Barbie Salvador is the Philippine representative for the Miss Tourism International World Finals to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 31, 2010.
Salvador, at 23 years old, represents the young modern Filipina – beautiful, intelligent and pro-active. She enjoys playing multiple roles in the society as a beauty queen, TV host, model, entrepreneur and even engaging in continuous learning as an MBA student.
In the recently concluded Mutya ng Pilipinas Pageant, she was asked, “What is the best thing about Philippine tourism?” Her winning answer was “Philippine tourism has a heart behind it all”. Passion, this for her, is what sets the Filipino apart from everybody else. And this is what she will show and share with everybody in Kuala Lumpur.
To prepare for the international competition, Barbie studied to do her own hair and makeup under the guidance and tutelage of make-up artist Albert Kurniawan and hairstylist Arjieh Jumao-As. Her hosting jobs came in handy to prepare her for speaking in public. She is grateful to Mutya ng Pilipinas and Smart Communications, as well as Delos Santos STI Medical Center and Magnus Sports, for extending financial support for her quest to win an international crown for the Philippines. She is also thankful of the support from Dr. John Cenica of Jancen, Mr. Joseph Tan of Sheridan Marketing Inc., Banana Leaf Curry House, Maybelline Philippines, ScribbleWorks, and the Pangasinan Government. She is also very thankful for the collaborative help of designers Charina Sarte, Martin Bautista, Jontie & Nickky Martinez, Rholand Roxas, Nat Manilag, Tina Dania, Jaz Serezo and others who sponsored her official wardrobe.
Salvador admits it would be a big challenge for her to perform well in the pageant, especially on these trying times of Philippine tourism, and on global tourism as a whole. Recently, she was acquainted with ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) Philippines and was alarmed to learn about the global issue on child sex tourism. She vows to support the organization and help educate the society about this issue in order to solve it. She has other projects in mind, mainly in the advocacy of bringing the Philippines closer to the Filipinos, and the world.
